Photos of NanaVan! {Pre-Renovations} Fall 2018

Driver's Side View of  NanaVan parked in my driveway.
This is the first real look at my new 1980 Ford Econoline Campervan!! I traveled all the way from Halifax, Nova Scotia to St. Mary's, Ontario to pick her up and drop off my older vehicle.

She really is in great condition! Better condition that I am in, to be honest!! Not a spec of rust on her!

Passenger Side View of NanaVan

Front of NanaVan
Her past owner took very good care of her, undercoating her every year religiously and keeping her indoors during the winter months. He was a old car enthusiast and knew how to care for them. You should have seen the pristine 1970's Cadillac that they had of his also... mint condition!! Sadly, this was an estate sale. He passed away suddenly this summer not long after being out in the van for a trip one last time.

Back of NanaVan

My pup, Eilidh, on the lookout... as we do the rounds, taking photos! This van was camperized at Camp Out in Stratford, Ontario. I popped in there before I left to come home and she was a bit of a celebrity! The mechanic that likely worked on her in the years previous had also passed on, but there was a whole group of staff that were fascinated by her and her vintage tire cover at the back of the van. And the decals too... I will have to upload more pics!

The "garage" at the back of NanaVan

Here is the first peek inside... The back 'garage' of the van, in is current configuration.

Toilet and Black Water Tank

The grey water tank under the toilet also catches all the water coming from the sink in the kitchen area. The black pipe on the left allows us to plug into city water as well to man the system.

I got myself a Mr. Buddy for the road trip home, but haven't had to use it yet. It's still there, in its box! It was much warmer on my way back than it was going there!
Water & Propane Storage

On the right side, you can see the back of the kitchen area at the top there, with storage for the water and propane tanks, and other tools. It came with everything I needed to hit the road!! Although there are still some issues with the electrical outlets and the fridge doesn't seem to be working.
Eilídh is inviting us into the van with her!!

Before, we enter... let me say this... first thing, the carpeting HAS TO GO!!! I think that is what made me so ill on my travels on my way back. Old upholstery didn't help either.

Did I mention that I drove ALL the way back from Stratford without high beams!!! Well, it turns out they are there afterall. Its a button on the floor, just behind Eilidh under the emergency brakes. Its going to take some practice to use them. I am almost too short to reach it!

She is vintage, that's for sure! The spedometer is reading just over 22,000 clicks... Kms I am presuming, only because its kms in large print on the dash there... but its likely turned over a few times in its lifetime.

The Girls are starting to get used to the whole idea of #vanlife
All cosy on the couch/bed with some pull out shelving under the bed.

She came with almost all the necessities for life on the road... Some of which is certainly handy!

What IS this??

Gas Stove is all piped in. 2-Way Fridge is not working.

Full view of the kitchen area

My mom's house-warming present for the van!
A beautiful little shabby chic match holder from her own kitchen!

Fully functioning toilet set up!

A great little fan once I figured out how to turn it on!!!

Nomads Who Sew Part II

Part II: UPDATE

I have picked up this beauty! She is still strapped into the van for now until I have time to set her up and work through what she will need for care. Also, I got a note from my mom saying how excited she was to see this machine. She remembers when my grandmother used to sew away on her treadle machine!! So, I think I shall name my machine: Grace! In honour of my grandmother! ♥

According to my current planned layout, Grace will be situated as a desk behind the driver's swivel seat. She will also be a work surface/desk, and extra counter space for the kitchen that will be along that wall, creating a bit of an L-shape work area.

The Underbelly of NanaVan!

Another win for Nanavan!! I took her in to get undercoated for the winter. She has been so pampered all her life, rust-guarded every year and kept indoors during the coldest months by her previous owner! She is going to be outdoors this winter, and likely from now on as I start to travel with her!

The fellows at Rust Check on Cobequid Rd in Lower Sackville, NS were amazing!! They were in awe of her! For a 1980 vintage Ford Econoline... They only found ONE small patch of rust on one of the wheel wells!! She is pristine underneath!! I had to take a look, and even took some pictures!! And this was BEFORE they undercoated her!! She is good to go for a while yet! Although they did recommend getting higher mud flaps for her wheel wells, and to fix that one patch if I am able. Go Nanavan!

Nomads who Sew! Part I

I recently joined a great little group on Facebook called Nomads who Sew! It is primarily folk living on the road with these wonderful hand-cranked or treadle sewing machines! Be sure to check it out!  It seems like it would be great to have to work on projects, and also to maybe earn a few extra dollars along the way, or trade labour for work on the van at gatherings, etc!

I found this!! A fully functional industrial-strength Singer treadle sewing machine that can also be hooked up to shore power!! This will sew through leather and thicker upholstery fabrics! I see great potential in this, as a little investment into my future :)

I am planning on building it into my van. My front seats swivel, so this will form a desk/work station that can also be opened up as my sewing center!

Introducing NanaVan!

A wee walk around to see my new "vintage" Ford Econoline Campervan that I just purchased in St. Mary's, Ontario and brought back here to Nova Scotia! A few immediate issues to deal with, especially the leaks, but otherwise, she is in great shape! I can't wait to get started on the renovations!

The Adventure begins...

I have to admit, I felt a little defeated when i got home from Ontario after picking up my campervan. I have been so sick from the journey... and worried I had landed myself with an albatross... worried this might be too much for me!! Its been niggling away at me all this time, as I got her licensed and insured here in Nova Scotia.

Do you know I drove the whole way home to Nova Scotia from Stratford, Ontario... WITHOUT high beams!!! And I only figured out when I was halfway through Quebec how to turn the dashboard lights on!! I had to position the flashlight on my phone to see enough to drive at night. That, and there is an issue with the seat belts, which I will need to try and replace... Thinking about all the renovations ahead... I admit, I was feeling pretty discouraged and overwhelmed.

I had booked in for today to take it in for its safety check, and the guy on the phone practically scoffed at me for giving up my lovely Subaru for this old relic!! No, that's not true... He ACTUALLY scoffed at me. And then, he proceeded to do so again when I dropped it off this morning. He must have noticed my glare, because he then suggested that it wasn't any of his business. I politely agreed with him. [grr]

Anyways, I discovered that I actually DO have high beams!! Only its a foot button, not a part of my signal handle! doh! That will take some practice to learn how to use, but at least its there...

But the really incredible news is... There is not a single thing wrong with this baby!! They were flabbergasted!! Even my guy at the front desk! He changed his opinion completely when he saw it, and realized that it was immaculate!! Do you know the previous owner, in Ontario, who kept it indoors all through the winter months, STILL had it undercoated every year? I also learned that it is very easy to get parts for this particular year and make!! I have the number of a place that will deliver parts here in Halifax... Anything I need!

I knew it was the 'one' when I first saw it... It was that inner sense... But I had started to doubt myself. I have always 'known' my vehicles... Its an instinct I have always trusted, even for knowing so little about cars. Someone up there was looking out for me!

My Nana who passed away a couple of years ago has been very present this entire journey... So, in honour of her... May I present... The NanaVan!!!! She is a 1980 Ford Econoline Campervan!!  I will get more photos up soon of the interior, the before... and then, the after I am really excited again about all of this. The adventure has truly begun!
